The Distance of the Virgo Cluster

چکیده

Six different distance determination methods of Virgo cluster members yield a mean distance modulus of (m−M)Virgo = 31.60±0.09 (20.9±0.9 Mpc). This value can be carried out to ∼ > 10 000 km s−1 by means of 31 clusters whose distances are well known relative to the Virgo cluster. They yield H0 = 56± 4 (random error) ±6 (systematic error), independent of local streaming motions.

HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...

Malmquist Bias and the Distance to the Virgo Cluster Anthony

This paper investigates the impact of Malmquist bias on the distance to the Virgo cluster determined by the H0 Key Project using M100, and consequently on the derived value of H0. Malmquist bias is a volume-induced statistical effect which causes the most probable distance to be different from the raw distance measured. Consideration of the bias in the distance to the Virgo cluster raises this ...

The Virgo Cluster Distance from 21 Cm-line Widths

The distance of the Virgo cluster is derived in the B band from the 21 cm-line width-absolute magnitude relation. The latter is calibrated using 18 spirals with Cepheid distances mainly from HST. The calibration is applied to a complete sample of non-peculiar spirals with i > 45◦ and lying within the optical (n=49) or X-ray (n=35) contour of the cluster, resulting in a mean cluster distance of ...

M ar 1 99 7 Stripped Spiral Galaxies as Promising Targets for the Determination of the Cepheid Distance to the Virgo Cluster

The measurement of precise galaxy distances by Cepheid observations out to the distance of the Virgo cluster is important for the determination of the Hubble constant. The Virgo cluster is thereby often used as an important stepping stone. The first HST measurement of the distance of a Virgo galaxy (M100) using Cepheid variables provided a value for H 0 = 80(±17) km s −1 (Freedman et al. 1994)....

The Acs Fornax Cluster Survey. v. Measurement and Recalibration of Surface Brightness Fluctuations and a Precise Value of the Fornax–virgo Relative Distance1

We present (g475−z850) color and z850-band surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) measurements for 43 earlytype galaxies in the Fornax cluster imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. These are combined with our earlier measurements for Virgo cluster galaxies to derive a revised, nonlinear calibration of the z850-band SBF absolute magnitude Mz as a function of (g475−z8...
